Molly and Ferdi discover the ocean
Our proposal is a storytelling awareness-raising project aimed at introducing preschoolers ages 2 to 5 to the importance of the ocean and marine conservation in a fun interactive manner. Our aim is to capture the minds of our nation’s youngest learning bracket, engage them in ocean-friendly behaviours, increase their understanding of our relationship with the ocean,mouldld them into ocean advocates and transform their view of the ocean beyond just a beach for family leisue. Firstly, we would produce 5 short stories and an ocean activity box which would be presented to 5 preschools in North-West Trinidad as an outreach activity. After the presentation of knowledge and activities conducted at the schools there would be an event for all participating preschools to present the information they have learnt using any form of art or media they see fit. The event would also have various booth, fun facts,games and activities all geared at building the next generation of ocean leaders.

- Despite the vast importance of the ocean, in Trinidad and Tobago, years of intensive exploitation of marine resources, pollution, coastal urbanisation and climate change have led to degradation and destruction of our marine ecosystems and the deterioration of ocean health. To protect, conserve and sustainably use marine resources, citizens of all ages need to know and understand their connection to the ocean. Children represent the future citizens and consumers, who will develop attitudes and make decisions that will inevitably affect the oceans; however, they are often left out of the conversation and not seen as agents of change. Fostering this, is the lack of ocean literacy topics taught at schools as it is non-existent on the school curriculum. As a Caribbean Island surrounded by the ocean it is important that everyone including children understand the importance of the ocean, the threats they face and the actions we can take to protect it.

- These ideas will drastically increase the awareness of the oceans within the youngest formal educational age bracket. The short stories and activity session will awaken the understanding of the oceans, what lies beneath the oceans’ surfaces and encourage children to want to learn more about the underwater processes. It would also develop their problem identification and solving skills as they would be encouraged to provide solutions for the issues the oceans are facing. The show and tell concept would bring the community together; the discussion in the classroom gets going among young children and it would be transcended to the home engaging family members and the wider community in ocean literacy. The self-confidence of many of the students would also be built as they have to present a project from a young age and speak on what new knowledge they've gained which is building both their leadership skills, creativity, innovations and their voice as a tool of change.
- ¿Por qué te interesa involucrarte con problemáticas que afectan al ambiente y/o a los océanos?
- Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, the ocean was deeply embedded in my being. I would spend days at the beach having an incredible time. My first visit to the coral reefs in Tobago was totally mesmerising and I remembered thinking that the ocean was the coolest thing ever! Years later, I found myself back in Tobago, to explore the reefs but things were different; the ocean floor was covered with dead coral, and those that were alive were severely bleached, waiting patiently to die. It was just a sea of nothingness and at that moment I knew we had a serious problem. Our activities were threatening the health of the ocean and people were unaware. The ocean is a part of our culture and I want to ensure that everyone including future generations get to know the marvels of the oceans. Through my degrees and role as a Peace Boat Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador and Sustainable Ocean Alliance Youth Leader it is my mission to educate others about the importance of our oceans!
